"Proclaim a Holy Fast"

"Is it such a fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?"
(Isaiah 58:5)

Holy Days they are, O Lord, to pray and fast for the souls of men,
for beloved Israel, and Your Church
For to starve the flesh and feed the spirit is the height of worship,
and the depth of an innermost search
We bow down to rise high in humble contrition, entering the place
called Holy, which is next to Your face
It is obeisance of mortal dust, to strengthen the spirit, to awaken
the soul, and embrace the truth of grace
We're closest to You during this time, dear Lord, and we hear the
clarity and power of Your omnipotent voice
Just to hear You in such power and holiness, is cause to shout with
awe, with wonder, and to rejoice
The Holy One of Israel has come, to commune with His creation,
and it's only when fasting that we're so attuned
It brings Your presence so strongly to heal our hurts, and apply
the balm of Gilead, to every care and wound
Ah, fasting is the burden of the flesh, but the ecstasy of the spirit,
a garden of aromas to the spirit's hunger
The body rebels, but the spirit leaps; the dust groans, but the Lord
weeps; His creation is so encumbered
But, the Lord's tears turn to smiles as He views the rise; the spirits
are growing stronger, in power and might
Each moment the spirit is fed, its muscles of faith reach for the
Groom, soaring like Eagles in a night flight
"Fast, children," says the Lord, to weary soldiers in war, for He
knows the spirit must exceed the fleshly dust
And the power comes from the Holy Ghost, that consumes the
human's being, in ethereal faith and trust
In the nighttime, there shall be light, says the Word of our Holy
God, and we are in the midst of darkest night
So, visionaries we must become, reaching beyond the earthly
realms, into the mind of God and His sight
"Maranatha" we cry, to our soon coming King; "Come and rescue
us," we cry from the end times of trouble
"Not yet," our Lord whispers, as He speaks in His nearness; there's
yet a world of souls, left floundering in rubble
"Feed your souls," cries the Lord, explaining that prayer will
strengthen us, to endure the hour, and last
We see the face of God in our spirits, when we humble ourselves
in prayer, and we "Proclaim a Holy Fast."
