"So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him,
Feed my sheep."
(John 21: 15-17)
Peter had denied the Lord Jesus Christ three times before His crucifixion, and now on the seashore after Jesus was risen, He asked Peter three times to verify His love for Him. It was three questions the Lord asks us today, and we receive the same answer that was given to Peter. Then, to drive the point home, Jesus Christ told Peter what it means to love the Creator of his soul; He gave him, as He gives to us, the "Definition of Love."
Jesus Christ, The Good Shepherd
Who can fathom the kind of love that the God of all creation has for the dust He formed into life? He gave His own life on the cross to save mankind, and His love runs deep; so deep that He told Peter, if you love Me, you will "feed" or save, nurture, deliver, give the bread of life to, My sheep. It's the command that echoes through the winds of time to His Church: Feed My Lambs!
The number "3" signifies the entirety of the death of Jesus Christ and His resurrection; the Lord Jesus Christ rose the third day; it was the third hour that Jesus was crucified; it was for three hours that darkness covered the Savior. The three of the godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are really three manifestations of "ONE" person, the Lord Jesus Christ: He was Father in creation, Son in redemption and Holy Ghost in regeneration. Biblestudy.org provides further insight into the number three:
"The Temple is marked by 3... a cube of twenty
cubits. Each consisted of three parts: The Court,
the Holy Place, the Sanctuary. The Temple had
three chambers round about. The Brazen Sea or
Laver held three thousand baths; and was
compassed by a line of thirty cubits on which
were three hundred knops. It was supported by
twelve oxen (3x4); three looking north, three looking
west, three looking south, and three looking east.
This order in naming the points of the compass occurs
nowhere else. It is the same in both accounts of Kings
and Chronicles. Why is this? Is it because this is the
order in which the Gospel was to be afterwards
preached throughout the world? Whether this was
the reason or not, the fact remains that the Gospel
was preached first in the north (Samaria, Damascus,
Antioch); then in the west (Caesarea, Joppa, Cyrus,
Corinth, Rome); then in the south (Alexandria and
Egypt); then in the east (Mesopotamia, Babylon,
Persia, India)."
Everything and everyone in the Bible had a reason and a purpose. Almighty God is precise, exact, methodical, and Holy in all His ways. His love has no borders; it's like a Holy mist that hovers over all of mankind and it reaches North, West, South and East ... It's the order of Love ...
The Holy One of Israel has one thing on His mind from day to day ... the sheep of His pasture. He is not willing that any be lost or perish, so great is His love for You and me. He came, was born of a virgin, died on a rugged cross, and rose again for one reason ... Sheep: men, women, and children; the flock of His pasture, the heartbeat of Almighty God's soul, the love of His being ... Sheep.
We are the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in the earth, just as Peter and the Apostles were. He left them, and us, His Bride and Church, a mandate. People who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are like those walking off a cliff into a dark dying abyss; they are living, yet dying; they are without love, hope and direction; they are headed for eternity without God. This is why Jesus told Peter three times to do the most important thing in the world ... Feed My Sheep, and that, dear friends, is the "Definition of Love."
If we do not warn them ...
