"His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his
horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall
push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they
are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are
the thousands of Manasseh."
(Deuteronomy 33:17)
Jacob pronouncing Blessing on Ephraim and Manasseh
It was customary for the elder Father to lay hands on the sons and pronounce a Blessing on them. Moses pronounced blessings on the tribes of Israel and the above scripture is where he laid hands on, and pronounced the blessing on Joseph. Later we see Jacob pronouncing Blessing on Ephraim and Manasseh. Today, Pastors, at least our Pastor does, lay hands on the Elders and Deacons of the Church, along with the ministers and leaders of the ministries in the Church, and it is also called "Anointing." They are anointed and blessed for the work of their ministries. In our Church, this is usually done at the beginning of a new year, or at different times throughout the year. This is always a very beautiful and a special service. In the old testament of the Bible, this was not only a Blessing, but it was highly prophetic. Laying hands on people, and anointing them with oil, is done for healing, for blessing, for anointing, and it is a mighty transference of power and wisdom; it is incredible; it is sacred; it is "The Blessing."
Esau selling his birthright
Gill's exposition explains it beautifully, "This has been in a spiritual sense verified in Christ, the antitype of Joseph, the horn of salvation, who by his great strength has vanquished all his, and the enemies of his people, and even spoiled principalities and powers." Further, Gill states, "The Targums of Jonathan and Jerusalem refer this to the birthright which belonged to Reuben, and was taken from him, and given to Joseph." Remember how Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup. These were important things in Biblical days.
Anointings and Blessings must not be taken lightly. Jesus Christ was anointed by the woman of Bethany, when she poured out the expensive perfume and wiped His feet with her hair. There is nothing more powerful, other than the infilling of the Holy Ghost, than being anointed or Blessed to do the work of God in the earth. It must be treasured as a prophetic moment in one's life, because the power of God rests upon the "anointed one" to do God's will in the earth. You say, "What does all this have to do with me? I've never been 'blessed' for anything." If anyone has ever laid hands on you for healing, or for blessing, you have received a transference of the power of God, and you must believe what was prayed over you. It's also important "who" lays hands on you; the Bible says "lay hands on no man suddenly." (I Timothy 5:22) This action is a transference of spirit and power; we must make sure the person is holy and pure themselves. The things pertaining to the Spirit of God are never to be taken lightly; God has a purpose and a reason for everything He does, and everything He does "through" us.
In the Bible, the power of God was also sent through prayer cloths, as they were anointed with oil and then when they were sent to the sick or diseased and placed upon them, they were healed, "God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out." (Acts 19:11-12)
