FLAMES DIVIDED
Floods, consuming fires, boat-sinking storms, plagues, human-swallowing earthquakes; these are not just happenings of today, but they were ongoing newsworthy events of the Bible. But, of all the adventurous, dangerous, novel-like events, the "Flames of fire" are the most interesting.
"The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire."
God used it to consume sacrifices; most notedly when Elijah the Prophet called down the fire which consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and then licked up the four barrels of water poured on three times. Elijah told the Prophets of Baal, "the God that answers by fire, let Him be God" and the Prophets of Baal agreed. They called on their Gods from morning until night, yelling, crying out, and eventually cutting themselves in an effort to "get their gods' attention." Then, it was Elijah's turn; he mocked them and called on the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel and we know what happened. Almighty God answered "by fire" and consumed everything around. What a story!
"Fire," God's favorite method of informing Earth that He received and accepted the sacrifice. It was God's flamboyant way of showing humans that He was pleased beyond measure. And, "flames of fire" are used again in the most astounding way in the Book of Acts. "And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:3-4)
That day started a movement which continues to grow even today and is manifested all over the world. What happened that day was profoundly significant! The Lord "divided" the flames of fire. One definition of divide is "to split into two or more parts that go off in different directions." He sent the fire into all the world, from Nation to Nation, and there are people in every part of the world who are now filled with the Holy Ghost and "fire." The church began with fire and it will end with fire; the Book of Joel states, "...I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh..."
God has His own "new math theories;"only He and He alone, can by His voice, "divide the flames of fire."
